Why This Is Different From What You Find at the Grocery Store

The craft chocolate section at most grocery stores has expanded dramatically in recent years. Lindt, Ghirardelli, Endangered Species, and a handful of others occupy most of the premium shelf space. Some of those bars are good. None of them are what Atucún is making.

The beans come from multiple origins, are blended to hit a consistent flavor target, and are processed with emulsifiers and additional ingredients to achieve a smooth, predictable result. Atucún starts at the tree. Efrén has direct relationships with farmers in Honduras, oversees fermentation personally, and controls every stage of the process from the cacao growing in the ground to the bar wrapped in our packaging in Grand Rapids. The ingredient list is two items: cacao and sugar. The flavor comes from the cacao, which means we need nothing else.
